Matt Fishman is a potter working out of Oakland, California. Coming from a background in restaurant cooking informs much of his work, and he makes wares for local restaurants with the values of making by hand and sourcing materials locally at the forefront of his practice. He also teaches out of the Berkeley Potters’ Studio.

By working through puzzles such as building a kiln, a better understanding of the underlying physical principles inherent in our craft is developed, as is a working relationship with materials and the firing process. Further, when things go awry or limitations are met, it is not only a chance to learn but a chance to deviate from the norm and start to develop solutions (and aesthetic directions) previously unseen.
