Robert Archambeau: Teacher, Mentor, Colleague, Friend

Robert Harrison

October 05, 2026

Robert Archambeau (RA) was a teacher, mentor, colleague, and good friend. I write this article to honor him and share with Studio Potter readers some of his contributions to his students, friends, and colleagues, along with providing a glimpse into his evolution as a potter, artist, and friend. I will focus on the 50-year mentorship and consequent friendship that developed between Robert and me. It began as a teacher-student relationship and transitioned to mentor, colleague, and friend.

RA was born on April 18, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio. He died in Winnipeg, Canada, on April 25, 2022. RA didn’t talk much about his early years growing up in Toledo, but he was proud to be the son of glassblowers,  bricklayers, and artisans who employed earth-based materials and passed along their creative and artistic traits. Growing up, RA was influenced by the popular culture of the late 1940s, including the biker counterculture.
